Norfolk Southern freight train 32N operated past three wayside Hot Bearing Detectors. The 23rd car wheel bearing temperature rose from 38°F over ambient to 103°F over ambient (non-critical tier), then to 253°F over ambient. Norfolk Southern rules only required stopping when bearing temperature exceeded 200°F over ambient. By the time the audible alarm sounded, the bearing melted and severed the axle, derailing 38 cars carrying vinyl chloride.
